ST. LUKE OFFERS A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL!
|
Would you like your child to be welcomed by a high five every morning as the Principal holds the door open for them? That is exactly what happens at St. Luke Catholic School. Ask any of our students. On July 1 of this year, St. Luke Catholic School celebrated 3 years under its new name. Formerly Southington Catholic School, ”We are still the same school, with the same great campus and dedicated staff, “said Joan Tortora, Advancement Director at St. Luke. In 2023, St. Luke became a STREAM School, being given the prestigious curriculum afforded to only four schools in the Archdiocease of Hartford. Laura Kelly, the school’s STREAM Coordinator, elaborates on the program: “A STREAM school is one whose educational philosophy involves combining the following subject areas (science, technology, religion, engineering, arts, math) into real world and relevant experiences for all students. The school welcomes families with children from Pre-K 3 through Grade 8, featuring modest class sizes for more individual attention. Parents looking for a smaller school with a family atmosphere should come and tour St. Luke. Students of all faiths are welcome to attend. “Though it is a faith-based education, we are truly teaching students to be good, solid moral citizens who can make good decisions,” Principal Patrick Hergott said. The school administration works to keep the tuition affordable, but tuition assistance and scholarships are also available. St. Luke’s teaching staff works to provide a stellar learning experience and lifelong skills. They work together to ensure that the curriculum provides everything a student needs. Teachers are available for help after school and keep close contact with parents. The middle school program boasts a rigorous curriculum for high school preparation. The school campus is large and well-equipped and safe, with security cameras and on-campus monitors. There is a full-size gym, a cafeteria, a state-of-the-art Science Lab, a Music room and a separate Art room and a library with a Resource teacher. Band is an option for grades 4 and up. Spanish is taught beginning in Kindergarten. There is a fully staffed after care program for all. Students can also join Finance Club, Book Club, Drama Club, Create Club, Chorus and, of course, Basketball. There is also a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society at St. Luke. A strong Home School Association allows parents to participate in many projects throughout the year. Volunteering at the school is a wonderful way for parents to demonstrate a willingness to serve others and adds to the family atmosphere. STREAM at St. Luke Catholic School
A STREAM school is one whose educational philosophy involves combining the following subject areas (science, technology, religion, engineering, arts, math) into real world and relevant experiences for all students rather than teaching them as stand alone subjects. The teaching staff work together to create a school culture that is positive and encouraging which results in students feeling comfortable to be creative and expressing their ideas. St. Luke students learn to brainstorm ideas to solve real problems, listen and collaborate with their peers and build models to solve problems. Students get experience presenting their ideas and models to their peers, inviting thoughts and feedback and then refining their models with the constructive criticism provided by their peers. Example STREAM problems typically involve an opportunity to demonstrate compassion to others in need. During one STREAM Academy, students learned about refugees and the many scenarios where families have to leave their homes and live in tent camps. Students were challenged to design and build a portable farm kit that would allow families to grow a limited amount of fresh produce to add to their nutrition and also give them a sense of purpose with something to nurture and tend to. St. Luke students researched varieties of fruit and vegetables native to different refugee areas, brainstormed materials that might be available in camps and built prototypes of different farm kits. This STREAM Academy combined different grades and the entire school was able to build models and present them to their peers during a gallery walk. Our class sizes are small, which allows us to do long term projects and work together across grades. Our younger learners bring imagination and endless ideas, whereas our older students are proficient using tools and keeping projects on track. Everyone has an important role to play!
